Headshots are not typically the most exciting or creative form of photography, particularly business or corporate headshots. However, it does require knowledge of angles, lighting, and composition in order to successfully execute them. There's also a science to providing a comfortable experience for the client, and delivering flattering results. Providing that positive experience is one reason why I like headshots. I will list three key points.
Headshots fill an important need-
Whether the client needs their new headshot for the job application process, startup business, promotion, or an update— this is something they need to help represent them in their venture. A lot rides on this headshot, so it needs to be well done and flattering, yet real.
Great way to network-
I have gotten to meet clients from many walks of life and different fields. During our brief time together, I learn about what they do and I may need someone in the future with their unique expertise. Assuming they have a good experience with me and are satisfied with their headshots, I am always thankful for their reviews, referrals, and future business.
Providing a good experience-
The best compliment a headshot client can pay me is when they say they are glad they found a dependable photographer who provided a pleasant, brief, and painless headshot session for them. Even better when they feel good about themselves after seeing the photos delivered.
Most people don't want to spend a long time getting their headshot done—their time is money, and getting their photograph taken makes them nervous. So, it's a sigh of relief when the session is brief and they like the photos. Some minor retouching is always nice to help the person out. However, it should not be visible or overdone. It's about providing that comfortable experience and filling that need—that's rewarding to me.
